Barding is armor for animals. It comes in most types, and takes all of the same characteristics as the equivalent armor. Animals need to be trained, using the Animal Handling skill, to be considered proficient in a particular type of armor. Only a character who is proficient with a particular type of armor can train an animal to use it.

Flying or swimming animals can’t use those modes of movement in Medium or Heavy barding.

Barded animals require special attention. The barding must be removed at night to prevent chafing and sores, and ideally should not be put on except right before battle. Removing or fitting barding takes three times as long as the equivalent armor. Barded animals cannot carry any load beyond a rider and normal saddle bags.
