The inky-black smoke obscures all vision, including darkvision, beyond 5 feet. A creature 5 feet away has one-half concealment (20% miss chance), and creatures further away have total concealment (50% miss chance, and attackers cannot use sight to locate a target). Furthermore,​ any living creature in this cloud must make a successful Fortitude save (DC 15) or suffer 1d4 points of temporary Constitution damage. In still conditions, the cloud persists for 10 rounds. This ability even works underwater, but a moderate wind or current disperses the cloud in 4 rounds, and a strong wind or current disperses it in 1 round.
