Orion Nation

The last of the 4 originators of the Orion League was the Orion Nation. It began as an experiment of loners desiring a place of their own as far from the threat of the rest of humanity as possible. Many like minded Fraal Wanderers joined this new nation with a desire to go beyond known space. Departing for the stars in 2230, they traveled out beyond the realms of known space, seeking new experiences and researching for the origins of the universe, and actually discovered the T’sa cluster, before moving on before the push of colonist who would become Nariacs. A truly diverse group of frontiersmen and explorers, they did not even pay attention to the goings on in the Terran Empire, and would have ignored GW1 if it had not been for the new neighbors, who found the Orion Nations knowledge of the known regions of space and fierce fighting skills vital to their own survival, as it was the Orion Nations involvement in the war, and the great sacrifice they payed in life, that turned the tide against foreign aggressors. After the war, the Orion Nation returned to its own exploration of space and was largely ignored by the rest of the nations who saw them as a group of unformed colonies as opposed to a nation. Ignored by all except those they assisted during the war, it was not even recognized by the Treaty of Earth in 2312, however its neighbors, the Nordic Independent State, New Columbia, and the Free Kyrena Society did not forget as was shown by the creation of the Orion League in 2321.

Game Benefits: Along with the Kyrenes, these guys represent the major influences resulting in the reputation for tolerance and goodwill seen in all modern-day Orions. Rather than attribute the PER score increase to them, however, the Orion “nation” embodies the -1 step bonus when using the Culture broad skill or any of its specialty skills. Kathryn Brown essentially demonstrated this ability with her surprising offer to dissolve her own nation and merge it with one of the others…prompting the rest to dissolve their nations instead and collectively form the Orion League. In addition, the original Orions were also hardy explorers and frontiersmen. And while some of their descendants have become much more cosmopolitan in the years following the League's transformation, those that have remained on the edge of civilized space have cultivated an ability to survive in even the toughest environments. Such individuals automatically begin play with the Survival broad skill and one free rank in the -survival training specialty of their choice. No points are paid for these skills and they do not count against the maximum number of broad skills that a hero can start with.
