Stardrive

Overview

A technology that involves traveling through a subspace dimension known as drivespace. Each trip through drivespace takes 121 hours, and the distance is dependent upon the strength of its engines.

Small ships can starfall 5 lightyear distances, while capital ships are capable of 35 or even 50 lightyear starfalls. It takes 2 to 5 days for a ship's stardrive to recharge and gather tachyons after a successful starfall.

The Stardrive

Mass reactors, a human invention from back in 2106, harness dark matter and outperform the old fusion reactors tremendously. Then the Fraal came along with their gravity induction engines, a system that bends gravity around the ship and causes it to ‘fall’ in any direction. The mass reactor is mind boggling to the Fraal as they had no hint or clue about dark matter physics. The gravity induction technology is beyond anything earth scientists could conceive of.

They soon discovered that the energy of a mass reactor was able to take gravity induction way beyond what was thought possible. It caused the gravity induction engine to bend space so far that it breaks it, and thus the stardrive was born.

The elegance of the two inventions are the applications aboard ships. The mass reactor has no problem amply powering all systems needed on even the largest fortress ships. Gravity induction makes an excellent fuel-free sub-light drive, as well as creating artificial gravity for the inside of the spacecraft.

The stardrive engine size determines the distance it can traveling a fall. Smaller drives on ships like couriers and traders can only fall 5-25 light-years, while much larger ones like the dreadnoughts and fortress ships can go up to 30-50 light-years.

Drivespace

Drivespace is a completely featureless void. Time aboard a ship during a starfall is boring. The crew has to wait 5 days before starrise.

Starfall

The vehicle vanishes in a spectacular wave of light A starfall takes 121 hours (approximately 5 days) no matter the strength of the engine or distance traveled.

Starrise

After starrise, the ship needs to recharge its engines if it wants to make another starfall. The recharge time is random (1d4+1 days) because it needs to gather tachyons from surrounding space.

Drivespace Communications Relay Satellite (Drivesat)

Communication between drivesat relays takes 11 hours and can cover a distance of up to 50 light years. Most major systems in the Stellar Ring and the Verge possess drivesat relays.
