Shadow Lord (Prestige Class)

Most people connect to the Grid for a purpose that has its routes outside of the Grid itself; to learn things, to entertain themselves, for business or professional purposes, and so on. The Shadow Lord, however, is all about the Grid itself, and more to the point, about her Shadow. Her shadow is her true self, and it in her shadow form that she is most alive. She is an unsurpassed mistress of the art and craft of engineering the most powerful, attractive, and downright coolest shadow on the Grid.

While her Grid skills make her quite capable at any task on the Grid, the Shadow Lord is most interested in proving her skills to other masters of the Grid. The prestige and bragging rights that come with beating other gridrunners in combat, contests, and competitions of all sorts is what she really after, and she’s well equipped to get what she wants.

Shadow Control

The Shadow Lord has much greater control over her shadow than other Grid users. She gains a +2 bonus on all skill and ability checks, saving throws, and attack rolls with her shadow, whether she is controlling it directly or has sent it off remotely. At 4th and 7th levels this bonus increases by +2.

Shadow Backup

With all the works she puts into her shadow, it should come as no surprise that the Shadow Master quickly devises a method of saving her shadow on the unthinkable chance that it could be destroyed in shadow combat. Any time her shadow is destroyed, the spend one hour and an action point to attempt to recover it and all of its installed software. She makes a Computer Use check (DC= 10 + total number of blocks of installed software). For the purposes of this check, each piece of soft-ware is counted as its full number of blocks, even if it was installed using a class feature or other mechanism to compact it.

Grid Combat

At each even-numbered level, the Shadow Lord gains a special ability from the list below. She must meet any prerequisites in order to select a specific ability.

Autofire: By making a Craft (software) check (DC 30) as a move action that doesn't provoke an attack of opportunity, the Shadow Lord may use any ranged attack software as if it had an autofire setting for one attack. The normal –4 attack roll penalty applies.

Prerequisites: Double Shot

Compression: The Shadow Master knows how to program more efficiently, allowing her shadows to carry more programs in their available memory. By increasing the write DC of a program by 5, the Shadow Master can reduce the memory cost of that program by 1 (to a minimum of 1). For each multiple of 5 that the Shadow Lord increases the DC, she may reduce the size of the program by an additional 1 block (to a minimum of 1).

Double Shot: By making a Craft (software) check (DC 25) as a free action that doesn't provoke an attack of opportunity, the Shadow Lord is able to fire any ranged weapon software as if using the Double Tap (Feat) feat for one attack. This ability may be attempted once per round.

Grid Weapon Focus: The Shadow Lord gains a +2 bonus to all attack rolls with either ranged or melee Grid weapons software. This bonus applies to all varieties and levels of software of that particular type. The Shadow Lord may take this ability a second time to gain the bonus with the other type of weapon software.

This ability may be attempted once per round.

Stylin’ Shadow

By 3rd level, the Shadow Lord’s mastery over her shadow’s appearance is obvious to all who see her. She gains a +2 bonus to all Charisma-based skill checks on the Grid. She also gains a +4 Reputation bonus while on the Grid.

Enhanced Movement

At 5th level, the Shadow Master gains significantly greater control over her shadow’s movement through the Grid. She adds +5 feet to her base move rate per Shadow Lord level and gains the ability to fly on the Grid at half of her total base movement speed. If the node she’s in allows flight normally, the Shad-ow Lord adds +5 feet per class level to the base move speed. The Shadow Lord’s maneuverability rating when flying is always perfect.

Repair Shadow

At 7th level, the Shadow Lord learns to repair her shadow on the fly. She can repair a number of hit points per day equal to her Intelligence modifier times her class level. She can use as much or as little of her allotted hit points at a time as she likes. Using this ability is an attack action that provokes an attack of opportunity.

Hard Case

At 9th level, the Shadow Lord learns to strengthen and reinforce her shadow, adding her class level times her Intelligence bonus to its total hit points.

Master Shadow

Upon reaching 10th level, the Shadow Lord’s control of her shadow’s form has become so complete that she can make fundamental changes to its core programming. She may choose a number of items from the following list equal to her Intelligence bonus. Each one is a permanent change to her shadow and may be programmed into her new shadow should the original be destroyed. Any time the Shadow Lord’s Intelligence permanently increases, she may choose another option from this list.

Additional Limbs: Each time the Shadow Lord selects this option, her shadow gains an additional arm, claw, tentacle or other ap-pendage. This grants her an additional off-hand attack for each extra limb.

Extra Storage Space: The Shadow Lord’s shadow always appears with a back-pack, briefcase, little red wagon, or other con-tainer. Each time she selects this ability, the Shadow Lord’s shadow gains +1 blocks of onboard memory. The container is merely a representation; the extra memory is part of the shadow and cannot be taken, disarmed, damaged or otherwise acted upon be any-body other than the Shadow Lord herself.

Eyes in the Back of the Head: The Shadow Lord’s shadow literally grow eyes in the back of its head, or a rear mounted video camera, or an eye stalk, or whatever other visual change she chooses to grant the shad-ow 360° vision. This means she can no longer be flanked, in addition to allowing her to see what’s going on all around her.

Natural Armor: The shadow’s skin be-comes metallic, scaly, leathery, etc., and it gains an inherent software bonus to Defense of +2. This ability may be taken multiple times; its effects stack.

She may increase or decrease the shadow’s size by one category and the transformation lasts for a number of rounds equal to Shadow Lord’s class level. A Large shadow gains a +2 bonus to melee attack and damage rolls, 10’ reach, and 8 temporary hit points. A small shadow gains a +1 attack bonus, a +3 Defense bonus, and a +4 bonus to Hide checks.
